UX DESIGN + STRATEGY

Building an immersive digital experience.

The goal of the ithaca.edu redesign was to create an experience that genuinely embodies the college’s distinctiveness as a highly student-centered community with a deeply immersive, hands-on, collaborative, and progressive approach to teaching, learning, and community engagement.

BULDING A MODULAR DESIGN SYSTEM

One of the biggest challenges before the website overhaul was that design, development and stakeholder approval was done in linear stages. With this knowledge in mind, my goal was to create a cohesive and flexible design system library that would align designers and speed up implementation among the engineers.

Taking inspiration from Brad Frost’s Atomic Design principles, we started at the most basic elements (type, color, spacing, and grid) and worked our way up in complexity (for example, a reusable table component or even a page template).

Building a design system provides a unified set of UX, design rules and patterns, including typography, space, layouts and grids, color, icons, components, and coding conventions, to voice and tone, style-guide, documentation.
